Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery

What is Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery?
Laser-assisted cataract surgery is a procedure in which a surgeon is assisted in breaking apart the cataracts of the eye by using a femtosecond laser. Unlike traditional cataract surgery in which a surgeon manually utilizes a blade to create a small cut along the corneal surface to remove the cataract, laser-assisted surgery begins with advanced 3D imaging technology which is used to build a 3D map of each eye, tailoring the surgical procedure to that map.
Next, Michiana Eye Center surgeons use the laser to create a circular opening for accessing and removing the cataract. Clinical studies have shown that this opening is approximately 10 times more accurate when performed with the femtosecond laser than what is achievable by hand.1,2 The laser is then used to soften and break up the hard cataract into tiny pieces, allowing for gentler, easier cataract removal.3
Depending on the patient’s pre-operative vision and desired visual result, Michiana Eye Center surgeons may recommend a tailored treatment plan that could include creating ultra-precise laser incisions in the cornea and a specific clear lens type, such as a multi-focal lens. This tailored treatment may reduce a patient’s need for glasses or contacts after surgery.
